19 May 2013 - Culzean and Greenan Castles

Yesterday rained the entire day, so we didn't go out and we took no pictures.

It was a cold, grey, and misty day when we set off to visit Culzean Castle which is perched on a cliff overlooking the Clyde. It is more of a country mansion than a true castle, and now belongs to the Scottish National Trust, who have restored it and opened it to the public.

The battlements look out over the mist shrouded river ...

The main house  has an impressive frontage, but the main entrance is through the gatehouse on the side. We toured the inside, but pictures are not allowed so I only have a couple.

This is the central oval staircase.

The gardens are beautiful, but not yet, and not today! The grounds comprise many acres and it's all National Trust Park so it attracts many walkers and hikers.

The stables now house the gift shop ...

The rolling hills of Ayrshire disappear into the mist.

However, as the day progressed the weather improved somewhat and we were able to pay a fleeting visit to Greenan Castle - the tower at the south end of Ayr beach which we first saw a few days ago (17th May). There's only the tower left and that is not in good condition ...

The town of Ayr - and its beach - can be seen in the background behind the tower.

An ultralight aircraft came puttering bye pointing out the juxtaposition of the highly modern with the truly ancient!
